The Cook Islands National Environment Service recognises the importance of the environment to the people of the Cook Islands. Our cultural identity is deeply rooted in our environment and it is a part of our heritage and legacy that must be passed on to future generations of Cook Islanders. As caretakers of the land, we must take pride in its natural beauty and it is critical to ensure that we work now to protect and conserve this precious resource. With careful nurturing, conservation and sound management we can achieve sustainable development while protecting our environmental, social and cultural heritage.

The NES developed the concept note for this project with support from the UNEP team, who is the selected implementing agency.
The objective is to reduce the amount of plastics entering the Cook Islands via the food and beverage sector and to support enabling environments for reuse options and other circular solutions, with the intention of reducing the burden on the Cook Islands waste management system, as well as reducing pollution and harmful impacts of plastic.
The estimated project cost is $6,200,000 USD and the project will be implemented across 5 years. NES and Infrastructure Cook Islands have been identified as the executing agencies for this project.
From February - April 2024, the National Environment Service and Te Ipukarea Society conducted consultations with various stakeholders for the RESPONSE project. Documents from these consultations and related to this project have been filed here.
